Is it? I think so. Fosse's 'All That Jazz' is very good(and comes close), but it doesn't have as compelling a storyline and good songs as 'Cabaret'. 'Singin' in the Rain' has its moments(especially the Fred Astaire dance sequence with the title song), but 'Cabaret' has a darker, more subversive edge to its storyline and isn't so twee as 'Singin' in the Rain'.

I have a serious dislike for musicals but think Cabaret is a great film. The thing that irks me about musicals is when people break out into song. Yes, I know that's what a musical is and its my personal opinion and have no problem that people enjoy musicals. Cabaret makes more sense to me because the music is performed on stage.
Aside from all that, Cabaret is a powerful film. Take the music out and its a great movie about a dark cloud rising over German society. The music doesn't detract from that and some of the numbers provide nice imagery of what is going on in 1930s Germany.

Yes, Yes, Yes... a 1000 times yes... it is the most intelligent, sanguine, dark musical ever made. And it is the best. And I said so...lol.

I saw the movie years and years ago - and thought it was very "meh" - then I saw a Stage production and was blown away... In fact I've since seen 3 different stage versions - and each one blew me away - I went back tonight to watch the movie (thinking maybe I missed something) - but no - it's just not doing it for me...
Good performances and choreography - but I don't like the story as much.
No, the greatest film musical of all time is Gold-Diggers of 1933. Closely followed by 42nd Street.
shareI think those are 2 of the top 3, though I would reverse your order. However, who are we kidding, The Wizard of Oz is the easily the greatest movie ever made, so it is obviously the greatest film musical of all time.
