He was supposed to be an ANGEL? Since when do angels need passports or have criminal records? And when did he "die" to come back AS an angel? What the hell happened at the end? He broke out of jail and got on a bus? WHAT?!?? The credits were rolling and all I could think was, "What the hell did I just watch?"
The only thing this movie made me feel was being ashamed of how white people treated black people back then.
According to some recently found footage, he's not an angel. He's an alien sent here to decide if the human race is worth keeping around.

John is not even explicitly shown to be an angel - the story is created to let the viewer make up his or her mind about that.
But if John is an angel, then he has come here as a man.
So he needs to travel by plane, or car, or bus, or on foot, just like any other man.
