Having NOT seen it yet . . .

I'm concerned that almost 30 years after it came out it will seem kind of dated and trite. I like Casablanca, but I'd seen all of it's rip-offs long before I actually saw it, so it didn't land with the thud it could have if I'd seen it w/in it's original context. I'm afraid if I watch this now it will just seem too melodramatic. Anyone care to comment on this? Please respond taking my concerns into consideration and not just saying 'it's a great movie'.

"Illusion, Michael. A trick is something a whore does for money...or cocaine!"

Maybe you will find it "melodramatic". To each his own.
But, I watched it the day after my return from Vietnam, and I cried. I watched it about 3 years later, and I cried. I watched it about 4 years ago and I cried.
I watched it last weekend, and I sniffled (probably because I knew practically every line and what was coming next).
Why don't you just watch it and form your own opinion? Or maybe read the book by the late, great Gayle Sayers. Your opnion may be formed by being 14 years old or so; a former football player and fan, like me, or old like me.
I also like "The Paper Chase" and "Love Story", all sort of "melodramatic" fairly old movies. I also like many of today's action and dramatic movies, so that may give you some insight to my perception of Brian's Song.

See it, you won't regret it.
