I finally saw it.

I rented it from the library for a week and watched it almost every night. While I know both Piccolo and Sayers started out with the Bears in 65 but I don't know exactly when Piccolo began developing cancer whether it was a year or 2 years before his passing. Anyone know?

You mean this movie is based on a true story? Wow! The drama in this movie was really really good. Damn near brought me to my tears. What a great relationship those two had. Find a compatable friend in this film is a miracle.

How did you not know if was baised on a true story? Didn't you hear the narration at the beginning?

reply

that doesnt necessary means it's true. Remanber The Wonders or Fargo.

This movie wasn't very good.

It was an over-the-top melodrama

That's right...it WASN'T very good...it was OUTSTANDING. This movie was filmed only 6 months after Brian Piccolo died, and his wife was on the set when it first filmed...James Caan said he almost couldn't continue shooting the film after he saw Brian's wife crying when Caan inadvertantly stuck his tongue in his cheek in one of the opening scenes...exactly the same way Brian Piccolo did in real life.

When you think of great sports movies of all time, this one ranks up there, even if it was a made for TV movie.

reply

Agree, and it may be the best made-for-TV sports movie ever, unlike it's remake in 2001, which was remarkably blah.

They seem to like it over at this site as well:

Pic was diagnosed in November 1969. he pulled himself out of the game in Atlanta and was diagnosed during the following week after a biopsy was performed at Illinois Masonic Hospital. He died only a few months later in June 1970 at Sloan-Kettering Hospital.

The person asked when he DEVELOPED cancer, not when he was diagnosed. He had testicular cancer that spread to his lungs, so it was probably four or five years before it killed him.
