Ending inspired by Dickey poem?

I've often wondered if the ending was at all inspired by James Dickey's poem, "A Folk Singer of the Thirties." The poem's protagonist and speaker is also crucified on a boxcar, but he survives.

The poem, as I recall, was published several years before the film was released --
