Strange how Robin Stewart (played the part of Mike in the TV series from 1971-1976) didn't play the part of Mike in this movie version?

I have heard a rumour that he was kicked off the set due to arriving late and drunk too many times and that's why Robin Askwith got the part.

Does anyone know the full truth?

It can't have been for the same reason that Janet Davies was replaced by Liz Fraser in the movie version of Dads Army (i.e. movie bosses wanting a "name" to play the role) as Robin Askwith wasn't particularly famous then, certainly no more than Robin Stewart.

Interesting info there. I liked this film a lot growing up in the 80s, and after seeing it on Channel 4 recently, it still works for me. It has more of the feel of a latter-day Carry On film than the series for obvious reasons, to its credit I think, though I'm also a fan of the series. It's the combination of it almost being a who's who of UK comedy of the 70s, the yellow '71 Cortina, the clothes (Robin Asquith's especially) and that intro theme music that also crops up throughout the film which sticks with me for days after, that makes it very 70s and British.
Peter Butterworth was a good choice in my humble opinion, despite being a lot older than Anthony Jackson and seeming a different character! Sid James does his dirty laugh more often, perhaps due to the influence of working with Gerald Thomas, or perhaps he was paid more! The inside of the houses also look very different and more modern than the series.
Watching it also reminds me of a clever sketch in the Fast Show from the late 90s parodying the era- the Confessions films especially, plus it looks a lot like this film and the later Carry Ons. The episode ended with the same style of music and bright yellow credits!

Don't forget about the 1970's MK3 Mini that the happy couple got as a wedding present.

Considering it was a brand new car, I do find it hard to believe the battery would need charging.

Unless they left the lights on overnight or something. Ha.

Thanks, but I wonder how Robin Stewart must have felt about that decision and the loss of the money he'd have been paid for a feature film?

He did star in that horror film (The Legend Of The Severn Golden Vampires) with Peter Cushing soon after, so perhaps that made up for it?

I'm sure he was very upset to hear that he was not going to play a part in the film version.
However he continued playing the part of Mike in the tv series for a further 4 years!
That must have been strange , working with Sid, who had influenced his sacking for the film?

Sid was rumoured to not attend rehearsals and drink whisky all the time, so I'm sure Robin Stewart was annoyed.
