Blacula...Remake?

I heard some folks talking. They said they "heard somewhere" that a remake was in discussions. I'm sure that is just a rumor...but it would be interesting. I mean, I don't want my last image of a vampire of color to be Eddie Murphy...Hell no! :-)

reply

I was just thinkin the same thing (I'm watching it on TVone's throwback theatre right now) only it would HAVE to be a comedy! The original is pretty much an unintentional comedy anyway and they wouldn't have to stray too far from the source material.

I could see Sam Jackson in the role played by Thalmus Rasusala but I'm drawing a blank on who should play Blacula. I could also see either The Wayans doing this ala "Scary Movie" or possibly even Quentin Tarantino ala "Jackie Brown".

I see a Horror-Comedy in the vain that Charlies Angels & Starksy & Hutch remakes were comedies. Cast wise real simple:

-Yeah, Sam Jackson as Dr. Gordon Thomas (Thalmus Rasulala)
-Blacula needs at least b-list star power as well as be able to nail the role and have comedic timing. I'm seeing Charlie Murphy or Clifton Powell.
-Tina(Luva) Zoe Saldana
-Skillet - I like Chris Tucker yet that means expanding the role but Andre3000 in a cameo role Ha-Ha.
-Tichina Arnold for the Female Cab Driver/Morgue Vamp (Kitty Lester)

Altyhough we;come a remake of any horror flick so long as they dont trash the original. But in my honest opion dont think there is a actor out there that can top William Marshalls Performance in Blackula or Scream Blackula.

Yeah Sam would do a pretty good job in that role. I'm not sure for the lead either. Just as long as it's NOT Ving Rhames...he's starting to work my last nerve. The Kojack remake was awful...well in my opinion. Apparently USA thought so too, they cancelled it. LOL Oh yeah, and keep Beyonce out of the role of Tina...she's talented, but not as an actress.

I doubt it would get remade, but it would be fun to see.

reply

You need someone with a voice and commanding presence like Wm. Marshall...somelike like Keith David or Dennis Haysbert...

reply

Exactly. While the movie may be campy by today's standards, you still need the commanding presence and a voice. Even watching it today I still fing Marshall compelling...would have to be someone who could draw you in to the whole story and character.

reply

I, for one, wouldn't like to see a remake. That's not to say that I'm not all for remakes (I loved almost every remake I've ever seen), but my reason for not wanting to see a remake is that my uncle was in the original. He played Sgt. Barnes, and I have loved the original since I was a little kid.

reply

A remake would be a real disgrace.
Hopefully not. I like the way the things ended in Scream Blacula Scream.

Morgan Freeman played the Dracula character on "The Electric Company"! He'd be great as Blacula!

reply

How about Lawrence Fishburne as Blacula?

Scott bakula as Dracula oh no man.

If Soylent Green is people, then what does that make Soylent Brown?

reply

Nah! I'm thinking more along the lines of somebody like Eamonn Walker who played "Kareem Said" in "Oz":
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0907708/

He's got a great voice, he's drop-dead gorgeous (pun intended), and we already know that he has a commanding presence from his performances in "Oz". I'd be all over that movie like cold on ice.

I think either Sanaa Lathan (Brown Sugar) or Kerry Washington (Ray) would both make a great "Luva".

Eddie Murphy DID play a vampire in a movie, though. Vampire in Brooklyn imdb.com/title/tt0114825

you're kidding! a blackula movie in this day and age? never gonna happen!

reply

If you do it up right with all the bells and whistles,
put some decent writing in it and a decent budget.
I think you would need to move away from the
exploitation and camp, and go for a more Victorian Dracula
and Mamuwalde, do more authentic stuff with his African legacy.
and maybe call it MAMUWALDE this time. Eddie's
Maxmillian was not so great. Grace Jones as Katrina
in Vamp was pretty decent. If they do it up right,
it would be fun and a respectful homage to William
Mashall.

"I would be willing to bet my studio career I could make Blacula way better and scarier than the original!"

First of all I would not bother remaking the original movie. I felt that the story even for the 70's was whack and a way to negatively portray AA's! I would establish a whole new precidence in film making by upgrading the whole "vampire" theme.

I would throw out the whole religious aspect to vampires. Crosses, Holy Water no longer work. There is no selection as to food. This means the infected do not care about "virginity". They will go for adults, children and yes even babies to get blood. The infected will be able to go into churches and also have reflections. They do not sleep in coffins but they do smell like the dead. They have a killer sunlight allergy like how they explained in Blade. They have limited speech due to erosion of brain cells from lack of blood kind of like the zombies in Return of the Living Dead. Also the longer the infected goes without blood the more Rigor Mortis (stiffness), pain and eventually death sets in. As long as the infected gets blood within a certain time after the initial exposure then they will continue to be human with a constant need for blood. Once they lose consciousness then they will become the undead.

As for Blacula himself, well his storyline will remain anonymous but know this time around he will not be that sympathetic character like Billy Marshall was in the first two movies. I have already said too much and I will not give you the story that I have already penned. You will have to hope someone with deep pockets reads this and gives me a multi picture studio contract. I just wanted to prove to you all that though my last name is not Craven or Romero, When I say I can make a movie scary it will make you hide under the covers.

Now this is a very interesting idea...very interesting indeed.

I agree they need to remake this and Scream Blacula since they have remade every other movie. It's a staple in our (black) community. I've changed my mind about what I said last year. The reason is because after I saw 30 days of night earlier this year the whole vamp anonymous thing just didnt work. I would probably make this movie similar to the original but with updates think what the Bram Stokers Dracula update with Keeanu Reeves & Gary Oldman did for that story. It was the same story updated which brought awareness to a new generation of viewers.

Blacula is never going to scare audiences! The least we can do is entertain the audiences through a great new updated story and better special effects. When I watch the old Blacula movies on DVD I laugh at how lame that story was and how corny the fx were. I wont rant on instead let me show you my vision. I agree with the other user on this thread that said they wanted to see someone other than Eddie Murphy (Shrek's Donkey) as a vampire. If you like my update be sure to check my Scream Blacula. P.S.>> If you are in the film industry and want to do this movie than get in touch with me.

Plot Summary: In 1780, There is an African Slave Trade that is established between Count Dracula & Prince Mamuwade's tribe under the premise that the workers were endentured servants. Mamuwade requests Dracula to return the endentured servants but Dracula refuses (because he ate them). Mamuwade travels with his wife Tuva to Transylvania and attempts to free his people but inturn is fed upon, turned into a vampire and locked away in a coffin.. The scene shifts to 20xx, when two antique collectors transport the coffin to New Orleans. The two men open the coffin and unleash an ancient evil on the Chocolate City. Blacula soon finds Tina, who is his wife, Luva, reincarnated, and gains her love. Tina's friend, Dr. Gordon, discovers Blacula is the source of the vampire plague and hunts him down.

Does anyone think Eamonn Walker would make a cool Blacula if there was ever a remake ? I think he's a really good actor and could probably take it to a whole other level. Let me know what you think ?

reply

Who would play skillet? "That is one strange dude" classic line.

reply

How about Martin Lawrence or Chris Rock ? That would be some real comic relief. LMAO already !!! ( Chris Tucker would probably do a really good "That is one strange dude" line.) I pick Chris Tucker.

I think Tony Todd would be good. So would Larry Fishburne. Those 2 men are tall and can be scary looking especially Tony Todd. I agree with the person who said Kerry Washington could play the girlfriend. Another person that might could be a good character is Gary Dourdan. Yeah I think Chris Tucker would be good as skillet.

reply

Sam Jackson would be good as Dr. Thomas, so would (IMO, anyhow) Mos Def. Chris Tucker would probably be who they'd use as Skillet. The major bummer that could put a crimp in a remake is that no actor could be as good as William Marshall in the role of Mamuwalde/Blacula. He should have been the African-American horror star of the 1970s and 80s. The only actor whom I could think MIGHT be able to bring a similar pathos and dignity to the part is Denzel Washington. But what about Dr. Thomas's friend, Peters, the cop?
