David Lynch?

Does anyone know specifically if Lynch is/was a Fassbinder fan? There are some real 'Twin Peaks moments' (to quote 'Clueless') in this movie.

Sorry I don't know 'specifically' but Lynch had to be aware of Fassbinder. Lynch is in his early 60s, I believe. (I'm not far behind). All through the 70s, the 'New German Cinema' was the hottest trend in art films, and Fassbinder was the boldest of the lot.
In my opinion, Lynch was also influenced by Fassbinder's later films, such as 'The Marriage of Maria Braun' (starring Hannah Schygulla who plays Karin in Bitter Tears) and, particularly, 'Veronika Voss', which is a loose adaptation of 'Sunset Boulevard'.

can definitely see the influence of Fassbinder on David Lynch. Having recently seen Veronika Voss, I can definitely see moments of it in Mulholland Dr.

I agree. Both are masterpieces. But not for beginners, haha!

Definitely.
I've always thought the lineage for this film went thus:

Bergman's Persona>Petra Von Kant>Altman's 3 Women>aspects of Lynch

Celine and Julie Go Boating is an interesting parallel to all of these films as well, a lighter and more comedic compliment to serve as a much needed antidote to the bitterness of the others.
