How could this be so bad?

Van Cleef and Mason are two of the coolest actors of all time, and even their talents couldn't save this awful film. Anytime Lee Van Cleef plays a "good guy," then the movie wasn't as good as when he's the thug.

I disagree, with the last comment and no the one about this film being bad or about Mason and Van Cleef being two of the coolest actors. Lee Van Cleef excelled at playing tough, roguish but Un-self-righteously moral Western heroes (out of his starring Spaghetti Western roles the only true villain he played was Angel Eyes; even Talby in 'Day of Anger' isn't truly a villain just wrong and out of place in the new West as depicted in the film). Out of his starring roles in which he was invariably good notable ones where probably 'The Big Gundown', 'For A Few Dollars More', 'Death Rides A Horse', 'Sabata' and 'The Return of Sabata' and 'The Big Showdown'/'The Grand Duel'. 'Day of Anger' he isn't the hero but isn't evil and the film is good.

God's Gun us somewhat bad but watchable (even if he is dubbed), 'Kid Vengeance' is somewhat fun and 'Captain Apache' like most (partly) UK made Westerns is absolute dreck.

So you are saying that only about one spaghetti western ('The Good, The Bad and The Ugly') is very good?!

Lee wasn't a good guy in Good Bad Ugly. He was a thug. Therefore, good movie.

I'll chime in as well. What about these films then?:

The Big Gundown

For A Few Dollars More

Death Rides A Horse

Sabata

Return of Sabata

The Grand Duel

All of the above films range from great ('The Big Gundown', 'For A Few Dollars More') to extremely good ('Death Rides A Horse') to very good ('The Grand Duel') to interesting ('Sabata', 'Return of Sabata').

Incidentally if you read King's comment, he is asking if you think GB%U is the only good Spaghetti Western film Van Cleef is in? Not whether you like it or not you like it.

In most of them he isn't a thug or villain; only, off the top of my head, in GB&U, a little in 'Day of Anger' and in 'Kid Vengeance' (which I forgot about earlier).

So the majority of his SWs (see Pharaoh's list) aren't good movies because he is a hero in them?
