May have worked better. He wanted Lemmon's father to be having an affair with a man while he was abroad every year. Watching the movie now, the adultery angle is somewhat passe, but a gay affair would really open up a whole new movie. It would still continue as Jack falling for Juliette Mills' character, but it would have been interesting to see what might have been.
