Why did Wendell agree to have his father buried with his mistress in Italy, while the blackmailer's body would occupy his father's grave in the United States? And what was the point of that diplomatic title for the father/blackmailer? The explanation seemed rather hazy. Was it sentiment or just a plot device?

I think it was sentimant. He decided that his father should be buried with his mistress

The diplomatic title was to get him quickly out of the country, without the usual red tape.
