Juliet Mills

Y'know, I know she gained weight for this movie, and her character supposedly has a "weight problem", but if you ask me, that bod is SLAMMIN'

Agree. I couldn't understand the "weight problem" thing when she was perfectly normal. And sexy.

Not only was the "weight problem" impossible to believe but she was also absolutely gorgeous. Not that that unbelievable bit mattered much because it was such a delightful film. Found it accidentally.

At the time I read that the director had made her put on 8 Kg (about 15 lb), not 12.

Nowadays putting on half a pound would be enough of a "weight problem"... :(

Oh, I agree! In one scene, Jack Lemmon's character even refers to her as "fat ass." What a mean thing to say, even if it were true and it isn't. I don't think she is overweight at all in this film. I think she looks gorgeous in "Avanti." Every time I see her on screen in this movie I find myself smiling involuntarily, because she looks so pretty and her manner is so feminine. As a 58 year old single, never married, straight male I would be very honored indeed to have such a beautiful and fine lady in my life!

I just saw Avanti this morning and came to the same conclusion as the other posters. She was supposed to be overweight, but I thought she looked absolutely luscious!

Perhaps over the last 40 years as we've grown heavily, our idea of what "overweight" is has changed?

The hilarious line is when 133lb Juliet Mills says to Jack Lemmon "why are all you Americans so thin?". Actually to my eye, she's probably closer to 140lb but no-one's counting and she does look pleasing on the eye.

reply

Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think her character was supposed to be fat, only she thought herself being so. No one really mentions her weight during the movie, except herself -and Wendell at the mortuary scene, but then she claimed having a weight problem the first time she met him, it seems he was just influenced by her own view. Anyway, she looked wonderful- and more and more all through the movie. What a beauty, Juliet Mills !

Just watched it again.

Jack Lemmon's character called her a fat ass and in another scene he said she was built like a Japanese wrestler.

In any event, I still think she was gorgeous in it.

She did gain weight for the film. And if you look closely, you can see it in her cheeks and, from the side, under her chin. But she's still beautiful.
