A flop?

Why this movie flopped in the US? This is one of the Billy Wilder's worst films. If you prefer Billy Wilder try "Some Like It Hot" or "The Apartment".

If it flopped (it did?) that doesn't mean it's a bad film. It may not have been a success money-wise, but it's a great film movie-wise. Definitely in my top-3. Rating-wise.

Why don't you like it. We had a great time watching this gem. We enjoyed the plot, the characters, location, humour, and... I can't think of anything really negative, except the lead actress was referred to as fat, though she clearly wasn't.

I agree that the constant "fat" references to Julie Mills were off-putting. I also agree that is is a delightful gem, though a little long. It's not Billy Wilder's best film, but it's certainly a worthy effort, very entertaining and visually impressive.

I'm not surprised it flopped. I only watched it cause it was on sale for $5 but what a waste of money. The acting was okay but for 2 such stars to be in such a nothing film was disappointing.

Maybe Hollywood had lost its taste for Wilder by 1972 - his subsequent films weren't hits, either (and THE FRONT PAGE was dreadful). AVANTI! is over-long and overly-indulgent, nevertheless it's very enjoyable and contains three of the best performances Wilder ever got out of anybody. I know I'll watch this film again, if only for the sheer pleasure of Lemmon, Mills and Revill - not to mention the photography and the music.

I was interested enough to look it up... IMDb's Budget vs. Gross for Avanti shows that it made $2M profit, in 1974; not so much a flop. Maybe not Wilder's best, but IMHO it's better than most rom-coms made since ~2000.

You say that "Some Like It Hot" or "The Apartment" are good movies? Gee I'll have to try watching them sometime

I never understood why people liked "Some Like It Hot". "The Apartment" was pretty good. But the Wilder film that cracks me up is "One, Two, Three."
