Just finished watching it on BBC2. It was my favourite film when I was about 6, so seeing it again really took me back. I don't know why they don't show it more often - it really is a great film.

reply

Its available on dvd in the UK too (amazon.co.uk). I hope they used a better print than the one the BBC showed.

reply

I only saw the last 30 minutes of the film and it seemed good. I hope they show it on bbc2 again soon.

reply

I seriously doubt it. It'll prob only ever be shown in school holidays and as it's already had one showing this year i don't expect it to turn up on terrestrial television until next year at the earliest (and it'll prob be at Christmas, Easter or during the summer hols. If you are desperate to see it then i've found the dvd for sale here for less than a fiver, inc p&p;

Thanks its been on tv twice now and ive missed it both times. The first time i saw it i saw the last 10minutes. What stuck in my mind was them saying goodbye at the end, but i didnt know the title of the film. Then it was on the other day i saw the last 30 minutes and then only when they were waving goodbye at the end did i realize that this was the film i had missed last time as well.

reply

The waving goodbye at the end really irritates me (although it is quite unique too). It reminds me of a childs panto (or the end of every episode of Rainbow!).

Still, its a nice little film and well worth owning for a measly fiver. The effects are quite well done (you wouldn't think of Lionel Jeffries as being a technically minded director)and i still find it sad that Lynne Frederick was not only widowed at 26 but herself died (from alcoholism) at the age of 40. A tragic waste really.

reply

Yeah i heard she died, and was very surprised to discover she was no longer alive. To be honest i didnt know who she was until Amazing mr blunden came on last week.
Seemed so innocent like butter wouldnt melt in her mouth and was an innocent english rose, in the film you wouldnt imagine she'd have had ever had a drink, let alone have a problem.

reply

Well, we know there were problems when she married Peter Sellers as his kids and ex wives despised her. I guess they thought she was a gold digger. A very sad ending to a promising career and i guess we'll never know the full story. I see the woman who played the childrens mother died too. I suppose i'm forgetting the film was made 35 years ago so some of them will have died!

reply

Yes i heard that she was despised for some reason, but it surprises me she would pass away so young. Its like she had so much going for her, so why drink yourself to an early grave?.
The woman who played the childrens mother died to. I only saw the last half hr, which seemed good, so i cant say i know the mother. But again, i hope it comes on tv again. Im undecided about purchasing over the internet. If it was available in the shops to buy for 5 pounds i probably would buy it.

reply

The woman who played the childrens mother, Dorothy Alison was probably more well known for playing the Nurse 'Brace' in the Douglas Bader biopic 'Reach For The Sky'

Yes very sad she died so very young, also the boy Michael from Mary poppins died young and the one who played the young Grinch in the Grinch also died young.

I never knew about the boy from Mary Poppins died young (aged 21). Neither did i know that the girl who played his sister is actually the sister of Michelle Dotrice. The boy from 'Song of the South' and several other big Disney films also died ridiculously young. Also not forgetting the young girl from the Poltergeist films, Sal Mineo from 'Rebel without a cause' and indian actor Sabu. All went way too young. It just goes to show just how lucky Drew Barrymore was to avoid being a statistic too! I haven't seen the Grinch but i assume you are referring to the Jim Carrey film?

Gosh, this board has suddenly turned quite morbid!

reply

I know it is a morbid subject, yes the grinch with Jim Carrey I do mean, the one who played the young grinch died young. The child actress to die young in such a nasty way was Judith Barsi from Jaws The Revenge, such a waste of life for an adorable little girl. I suppose the list goes on.
Long live Drew Barrymore.

Its tragic when anyone dies young but Judith Barsi certainly didn't deserve to die in the way she did, at least all the others were either self inflicted or due to illness....

I'm rewatching The Amzing Mr Blunden with my 2 little ones at the moment, poor girl, all her potential lost because of 1 poor decision..if she'd never married Sellars maybe she would have not ended up in such a bad way 8/

I am the ray of darkness in your otherwise sunny day...

Poor Lynne. She first came to my attention in Henry VIII and his six wives. She portrayed Katherine Howard to perfection!!! And then it clicked she was Lucy in my favourite children's ghost story. I've seen all her other film too. Such a tragic actor. RIP LYNNE FREDERICK.
