Incident with the exploding aircraft

This film was based on Spike Milligan's own wartime experience. Did that incident with the exploding aircraft where Private Bliss was blown to pieces really happen? If it did, was the sergeant court martialled and sent to prison? After all he was directly responsible for the death of a member of his platoon, he had no right to instruct his men to loot a crashed German aircraft and must have known there was a danger that an explosion was likely?

I recall an interview Jim Dale once gave where he said that while filming that scene he asked Spike about it and Spike said it never actually happened but it was just a good scene for the film. It never appeared in the book, either, which shiould have given you a clue.
