Is the U.S. DVD missing some scenes?

Just got the DVD but it appears to be missing some scenes. Was there a scene where we see the Antonio Fargas character crucified? The version I have has lots of awkward cuts and is kind of annoying. Does anyone else have this problem?

reply

I'll check out my old tape and see if Antonio Fargas gets crucified. I'll get back to you soon.

Is the crucifixtion scene in the vhs, and what company label: Key or MGM?

reply

The DVD did indeed edit-out the scene in which Antonio Fargas is crucified. I bought the VHS instead.

Which makes the reference to the act completely out of place in the next scene in Doc Johnson's office. I happened to be watching this on DVD at that exact spot when I read this thread.

reply

Is this the Key or MGM vhs?

reply

It's neither. I ended up watching it on an old Warner Brothers PAL videocassette from 1984. There is only a reference to any "crucifixion" scene on that tape.

I just don't know. I do know that Before Antonio Fargas gets "crucified" he gets the living crap thrashed out of him before being dragged off by the Mob's thugs. He's a bloody mess!

He was also castrated! But like the crucifiction, it is off screen. I wonder if the discovering of him being crucified was cut before release because it is confusing as to what exactly happened to him, how did they know where to find him, who tipped them off, ect?

Dear alcope2000: After watching my American-made NTSC video of ACROSS 110th STREET last night there is a reference to Antonio Fargas' character being castrated. At the end of the bar scene where Anthony Franciosa and his thug buddies are thrashing Antonio Fargas to a bloody pulp you can hear him say for his cronies to take Fargas outside and they'll punish him some more.

It's possible the scene of him getting "crucified" could have been shot and edited out to avoid an [X]-rating but you can see on Antonio's face as he's riding in the ambulance there's something akin to a long burn mark on his face.

I reckon you can figure that Antonio (or what was left of him) was found outside the bar and you can also figure the cops and an ambulance would have been called from someone anonymous inside the bar after the thugs left.

Something like "There's someone who needs medical assistance outside the (Blank) Bar. He's all beat up."

Really a violent movie. Still holds up well today, I think.

It's definently one total mean bad boy violent movie. It never leads up it's edgy tone or pulls punches. One of the best crime movies.

reply

It's the kind of movie that's not made anymore. I reckon we should be thankful for the 1970s. A great decade.

I think it would make a good double-bill with THE TAKING OF PELHAM ONE TWO THREE.

reply

Yeah, how im so very proud to be born in the 1970's.

reply

Dear J-L: Me, too. '70s movies are groovy.

My favorite decade to collect movies from.

Latest acquistion: ENTER THE DEVIL (1972). Original Japanese VHS (a rare video, to be sure) is un-cut. The Something Weird Video DVD-R is missing a bit of footage and the picture quality is worse than the 20+ year-old tape.

Lots of desolate Texas atmosphere at work here.

I never heard of "Enter The Devil". I do like Something Weird Video's, they're fun and nostalgic to watch.

reply

I doubt the crucifixion was ever filmed... why leave so much else in and go to the trouble of cutting out a crucifixion scene? I don't think it was confusing at all, it's obvious what's happened because the characters all talk about it - we're all talking about it too aren't we? Do you really think a 1970s film would show someone actually being castrated?

Would 1978's "I Spit On Your Grave" count? The raped woman castrates one of her attackers in a bathtub, you don't "see" it but it's so well done you almost feel it!

reply

To settle the issue...the "crucifixation" scene definitely is edited out of the DVD at least, it's like watching a cinemascope film in pan and scan on television...

I watched-This , at the "Walk-In" Theater , Several-Times , during It's Original-Release.

ANTONIO FARGAS's Character is-found "crucified" , but I don't-remember actually seeing-Him being taken-down , but being rushed-off in an Ambulance ... as for the Castration , It was-mentioned , but not-shown.

I met ANTONIO FARGAS , Several-Times , during the 1990s , and He said that His Role in "100TH STREET" was , probably , the Most-Intense Acting-Role that He ever-had !

"110th Street" !

SORRY !!!

I recently found a Key Video VHS and watched it. There is NO crucification or castration scene.

I saw this when it came out and remember it quite vividly and watched it again last night. We never see exactly what was done to Fargas. Franciosa orders his men to take him out of the bar/whorehouse and the next time we see Fargas, he's covered in blood and in great pain in the ambulance with Quinn trying to question him.
