if they were poor?

makes no sense sicne grandma and grandpa only had 2 kids

sick and disgusting

Possibly because Olivia seemed to have no relatives whatsoever or none with whom she had contact. Just a guess.

Gonna nominate "prim and proper" Corabeth for this category Jason. You just know that she angrily straddled Ike every evening, to bitch about the previous events of her day, and just went to town on Mr Johnson, like she was grinding her own Johnsonville Sausage :D And Ike was probably all too happy to listen.

1. No reliable birth control available

3. Kids back then helped their family out, got jobs, contributed.

I assume to work the farm. I believe before the 20th century it was common for families to have lots of children to work the land. Many of them died off at a young age before vaccines for childhood diseases became widely available.

It's what people did back then. And every boy was fated to work in the family mill. So the more kids (preferably boys) the better.
