why did it seem joh boy never had chores


he was always out doing his own stuff while the other kids were working

They were all running around doing their own stuff most of the time as far as I can remember.

He helped in the saw mill

He did have chores. The very first episode, Olivia was yelling at him to get down and milk the cow and he was grumbling about it. He helped in the saw mill sometimes. But, honestly, besides Ben working in the saw mill and the girls gathering eggs or something, we never really saw any of the kids doing that many chores. But, that doesn't mean they weren't doing them.

Not that we count on television to depict reality but the children would have been doing all kinds of basic chores. The Walton's employed the sensibilities of the 1970's which came down hard against child labor. It might seem a little extreme today but there was a time where children were placed into hazardous low paying jobs and was a good thing that labor laws were developed to protect those at risk.
