'Streets' on DVD

Anyone have any info on when "Streets" is going to be available on DVD?

Anyone know how to lobby who ever owns this title?

For Bay Area people, "Streets" is on CH. 44 at 7 PM on Sundays (as of 01.17-04.)

reply

Interesting fact.

The writter of Streets of San Fransisco is my grandfather.
No I do not know when Streets will be out on DVD. But I can ask my grandpa.
:)

reply

I am also interested in DVD's on the Streets of San Francisco:) Please notify me as well when you get an answer from your grandpa! Thank you!

reply

Did you ever find out if and or when The Streets will be released on DVD?

Thanks

I'd love to have this series on DVD as well.

Also for Bay Area people, KPIX (CBS 5) sometimes shows "Streets" episodes as filler on weekends. It doesn't seem to be at a regular time so I use my TiVo to catch them.

reply

Yes, channel 5 in SF (CBS affiliate) shows this on Sundays at 10am (as I write this) but channel 44 (UPN affiliate) used to show it later in the day. These two channels have some sort of reciprocity deal between them and often you'll see various CBS shows on 44. Very unusual!

Doesn't anyone else think it ironic that the grandson of one this show's writers made a spelling error? :-)

reply

Yes, I noticed. It should be "... he 'was' the writer." Past tense. It was always a good show for me to watch. Here in Philadelphia/South Jersey, it was on 11:00 A.M. channel 48 WGTV for the longest time but not anymore. I used to always catch it if I had a day off from work. I always like the backdrop of the SF scenery.

reply

Not unless his Grandfather is deceased. What I was actually referring to was his misspelling of "writter" as there should only be a single "t"

reply

This was a great series and is interesting because it used actual exteriors AND interiors of San Francisco locations and few sets. If you want to see what the city looked like 30 years ago, this will show will give you a great idea. I saw them film a scene in the old Metropolitan Life building on Stockton and California streets, and today it's a luxury hotel and completely remodelled called the "Ritz-Carlton". I would love this DVD collection!!

reply

AFAIK about the only sets they used were Stone's office (the upstairs interior of the Hall of Justice).

Most all the other later cop shows shot in SF used sets extensively: Partners In Crime, Crazy Like A Fox, Midnight Caller, Wolf, even Nash Bridges (although in the first season or two they did use an old bank which the police dept had been using as the Tenderloin substation for a while)

I should know, I've worked on all of them.

reply

The name of that old Bank in San Francisco's "tenderloin" neighborhood was called "HIBERNIA BANK"... and has a beautiful stained glass ceiling. The bank was also used in the Eddie Murphy film "Metro".

reply

Hi.

Yes, you brought up an interesting fact about sets. wow, that's great you worked on all those shows. I loved Wolf and wished it had been on longer (they only filmed 13 episodes). I wished CBS had given it a chance. I remember that was around the time of the '89 quake. How was it like working on the Wolf series?

I also loved Midnight Caller, which was on around the same time. I hope they release that on DVD soon. Good use of SF locales, and I like Gary Cole. How was it like working on Streets of SF?

Best,
Derek

Hi.

I enjoyed reading your post. I love watching old shows like Streets to get a sense of how things were in the '70s. I'm a fan of 60s and 70s culture, and you're right, if you want to see how SF looked in the 70s that show does it very well. Good use of locales. The city's changed a lot since then.

You said you saw them film a scene. Was Michael Douglas or Karl Malden in it? what a historic moment to have seen that, wow. do you have any other memories of the show?

reply

Hello. I too am a long-time fan of Streets of SF. I am old enough that I watched the ORIGINAL episodes, every one of them, when they were first shown on tv. Since then I too have seen them in reruns but not now here in Portland OR. Instead the locals and cable channels show more recent shows while leaving older quality shows like Streets out of the cycle. I also would LOVE to see the entire 5 years on DVD. It still ranks as one of my 5 best ALL-TIME shows and I am 56 years old!! Please contact me with info should any come up.

reply

yea I've seen it on sat afternoons mabe 3 to 5? the last one I watched was on a sunday afternoon around 1 or 2 had Ricky Nelson as a killer pimp! fortunatly I rec a must see for all Californian's....drum roll please; Dead Lift: with Arnold Schwarzenegger as the bad guy.

I just read on TV on Dvd that it is planned for an april , 07 release. I can't wait. It's available for pre-order at amazon. This is great news

reply

BE CAREFUL: On Amazon it says Season One PART ONE (only 14 episodes). Looks like yet another money-grubbing screw of the public.

reply

About time it arrives on DVD, it's only one the 5 best US cop shows ever! The others of course being: "McCloud", "Kojak", "Quincy", and "Columbo".

reply

I don't think anyone expected more than 14 episodes at a time on this set. 14 episodes is 14 hours of shows. That is 7 DVDs and it will make the series more affordable for most of us. I just pray that Universal is not going to reproduce it. They did ADAM 12, Emergency! and Abbott and Costello and all have had flaws in them from cheap reproduction techniques in Mexico.

But "Hawaii Five-O" sees all the first season's 24 episodes released, so why not the same with Streets? :(

reply

Simple greed, plenty of shows have more than 24 episodes and include them all, I think producting "volume 1" will only result in lower sales than they could have had. I do, however, expect them to release the other seasons in one go. Otherwise that would be a complete rip-off.
