Episodes From 1974 When Grady Lived With Lamont

Those episodes were wack! The show wasn't the same without Fred Sanford! Redd Foxx shouldn't have left the show during that time!

Well, he wanted a hefty pay raise, along with some other demands, like a rehearsal hall with windows.

reply

Yeah I heard that during that time, they thought his character might be gone for good, like maybe write it as him moving back to St. Louis.

The show may have not been the same without Redd Foxx, but those "Grady Episodes" were the highest rated of the series run. I think Whitman Mayo did a decent job and in Demond Wilson's book, Second Banana, he says NBC wanted to move forward with Mayo being a permanent replacement. Wilson opposed the move and Redd Foxx eventually returned.

Grady wasn't Fred but he was hilarious. I love the cousin Emma episode.
No Roger, no Rerun, no rent

I like the Grady episodes. Mayo was no Redd Foxx, and Grady was no Fred, but I think when WM stepped in and basically substituted for RF, he pulled it off very well. Better than you would have expected him to, based on many of those pre-Grady-filling-in-for-Fred episodes when he was depicted as a borderline senile old man who couldn't remember anyone's name.

The Grady episodes are some of my favourites.

It was indeed a reach that Fred needed Grady to look after Lamont and the house, but without Redd Foxx in the picture, I don't think those episodes would have worked at all otherwise. It wasn't the same without Fred, but I still think those episodes were worthwhile because they spotlighted strong supporting characters such as Grady and Aunt Esther. Regardless, I hope Fred had a nice time visiting family in St. Loius.

Grady did fine filling in for Fred. As someone noted without Grady filling in the show would have fallen flat. Plus a few of the eps were among the best-the one where Lamont takes up karate, the one where Grady keeps getting social security checks and the one with cousin Emma were pretty funny. Grady was a nice change of pace until Fred returned.

I can't stand those episodes either. The only one I like is when they thought that weed (pot, marijuana) was growing in the garden, but that's when everyone else was hilarious; Rollo, Smitty, etc. I only wish Fred was present in that episode.

When theres no more room in Hollywood, remakes shall walk the Earth.

I actually like Grady better than I do Fred

Channel Six News, they'll finger anything with a pulse!

I love the Grady episodes! Fred was awesome, but Grady did a great job in the meantime.

Especially with Woody and Esther.
