Odd that network have released this soundtrack and the Danger Man half hour episodes, but not the actual DVDs of those shows.

I wonder if they are forthcoming...

Network have just announced the release of the Danger Man Half Hour episodes, which will go along with its soundtrack CD.

I wonder if that means The Protectors is on its way? I strongly suspect so. The A&E set has pretty ropey picture quality, but it will pose me a dilema. Network DVDs aren't cheap and to buy a set I have purely for PQ, at their prices, would be pretty painful.

Apparently their Space 1999 is a considerable improvement over A&E's, but as only Series 1 is available I went for the A&E; I do think it looks considerably better than their The protectors, although I think the outdoors location work shows up grain more than S1999's almost exclusively studio footage.

You were right..! The Protectors will be re-released in the UK on the 23rd of August. Apparently it will be the same quality of the one out now, which is not bad but I was hoping in a sharper image. However, who knows, maybe it will be better. Space 1999 is coming out in bluray from Network as well; that will look stunning since they have the best Space 1999 edition on the market having restored the original film. Still a question mark about part 2. Let's hope.

If you hear/see anything about the Network PQ let me know. The Network set is probably cheaper than I paid for the A&E ones combined.

Personally I find it a little frustrating for Network to release a BRay of Space 1999 S1 while still ignoring Series 2 entirely.

On a side note, I've always felt the stories on The Protectors often seemed rushed in a half hour, while the Space 1999 episodes often seemed stretched to an hour. I've wondered how both series would have worked had the time slots been reversed, although the budgets would probably have precluded this. It is refreshing to see an adventure series like The Protectors in a half hour slot; the only other example I can think of from the period was The Adventurer, and after that the format died completely. They were a refreshing blast.

I purchased the new DVD set. I only watched the first episode and the colours have been revived somehow so I am happy to have bought this even if I should see the all series again. The introduction to the series is also well made at the beginning. I am happy to have bought this and sold my previous one on amazon. Will certainly get the Space 1999 BR and hope for the second series in the near enough future. I believe the format worked well for the duration of the two series. Not too sure about the reverse. If you are a fan I think you would be pleased with the purchase of this set.

Thanks for that. I would probably be tempted to get the Network set then, but will probably wait for a sale.

As soon as I re-buy a DVD set, they will probably announce a Blu-Ray release!

I was a bit surprised to check and discover that The Protectors was shot on 35mm. It can probably take quite a bit of restoration in that case. The US set looks more like 16mm.

It was just a random thought about the respective episode lengths, not a serious suggestion. I've been slowly working my way through both series again and S1999 in particular, I think some episodes are based on a fairly basic premise and that they are struggling to find action to fill out the whole hour, with a lot of navel gazing in some episodes. The setting, limits to the Alphan's technology, and the cost of effects make it a little more difficult to pad than, say, Star Trek. The Protectors on the other hand, often throws you into the middle of a plot, and could easily be more detailed. Both series have their unique feel and I wouldn't change them; so it was just an idle speculation as to what they might have been like with reversed running times.

Hi, as you say, because of the way TP was shot, this might be the best version we will ever see. It is improved but I believe all they did was to refresh the colours, still worth it though in my opinion, considering that it had already been restored. You also might be right about duration..who knows. There is no right and wrong, it is subjective. I would have loved to have 1 hour of TP per episode but also admired the fact that they squeezed in a full story in such a short time. The price on BR od SP is high but amazon UK will lower that.I do not have the second series but I was so impressed with the Network release which is absolutely perfect, having been done from the original, that I will get the BR as well. I have already sold the other set.
Thanks for your answer, very informative.

There is a commentary on the first episode of the Protectors (U.S. A&E release) by the director of the episode (John Hough) who mentions that this series was filmed on 16mm film which probably accounts for the lack of picture quality. The director stated that he will never understand why the decision was made to film the series on this kind of film stock.
