How many kids played Phillip?

Every time I watch MAUDE there seems to be another kid playing Phillip. I know IMDB lists Kraig Metzinger and Brian Morrison but no other actors. I could have sworn I saw another kid that wasn't either of those two run up the stairs the other night while I was watching, in fact I think they actually used TWO different Phillips on the SAME EPISODE! One Phillip ran up the stairs and a few scenes later another Phillip ran back down! Does anybody know how many kids played Phillip?

reply

In the Maude series, there were only two kids that played Phillip. Morrison played him from seasons 1-5. Metzinger played him in season 6. In the All In The Family pilot, they didn't show the kid on screen, but we hear him talking. I'm not sure who was the actor was for that part...

It's interesting when they replaced the first Phillip they didn't get an actor that sort of resembled the first kid. They just went completely opposite. Any story as to why Morrison left the show?

reply

I can't find any information on why he didn't finish the series. Evidently that was the last thing he did in his career. He must of just went to college or something. It's anyone's guess. Most child actors/actresses end up leaving the showbiz scene after a certain age...

Morrison went on to play George Kennedy's son in Airport 75 !! Then according to IMDB he left acting and went into Special Effects.

reply

I didn't know about Airport. It's good to see that he still stayed in the business in some capacity instead of becoming one of those washed up former child stars that wind up dying from some drug overdose or having various run ins with the law...

One of the disappointments about the last season is that, when they finally had some episodes that focused more on Philip, they replaced Brian Morrison with a bland made-for-tv kid, who couldn't act.

reply

True. I never like the whole idea of the Philip character in the first place. I feel that kids seem to slow the series down, especially a show in the caliber of Maude. At least in seasons 1-5 the majority of the episodes he appeared in were limited to hi and goodbye. Then they would get back to the meat and potatoes of the storyline of the episode...

reply

Speaking of meat and potatoes, I've notice that during the whole series Philip never gets to have dinner with the family. In the episode where Mrs. Naugatuck gets married, every one goes off to the wedding and leaves Philip upstairs.

reply

That's funny. I NEVER notice that. I'll have to watch that episode again. That goes to show how much interest of the kid that I have in the series. Apparently I'm not the ONLY one to think that way. I don't know why they had the character in the series. I guess to show sympathy for Carol, the divorced single mother. I will say this. The ONLY real moment where Philip really shined and made any kind of impact in the series, was when he stood up for Maude on her reasons for endorsing Henry Fonda as president when everyone was giving her the third degree....

reply

Actually, they didn't leave Phil upstairs. At the end, Carol did say,"I'll get Phillip."
And he was briefly shown by the front door with the rest of the gang ready to leave to go to the church...

I liked the original Philip too

reply

According to the TV Guide, he got too tall.
