I forgot this turned into a sitcom for a while.

MASH is a weird show. Tonally all over the place. There was a good stretch where it got straight goofy and the laugh track started making sense. Then it got all serious again. What's wild is the sitcom material actually works. That's a good show too. It's just something totally different. As a form a free form story telling, there's really nothing on tv like this. It's such an interesting show.

Even the serious episodes had a side plot where hilarity ensued (sorry, I just had to say "hilarity ensued").

I only remember one episode where they played it completely serious. They were waiting for a guy to die so they could use him as a donor for another patient. The cast and producers agreed to no laughter while filming

I forgot about that episode. There were a few funny lines in that one but no funny sub-plot.
