I FINALLY GOT AROUND TO WATCHING THIS....

I was a fan of the campy 90's series Kung fu tlc.Because of that i always wanted to check out the original show.Im not a fan of old westerns tv shows,i tend to find them melodramatic and boring,so i put off watching it for a long time.It wasnt until David Caradines passing that i finally decided to sit down and give it a watch.

Im so glad i did. After watching this show i have a new found respect for Caradine as an actor. The show was about morality and philosiphy rather than gun fights and bar room brawls. They should put more shows like this on the air.

Theres very little originality left in movies and tv today.Studio execs today are all about money. They dont care about originality or quality. Its all about the new trend or what the popular formuliac plot is.There are a few gems here and there such as Lost and Life on mars[uk],both very original unconventional ideas when they came out.unfortunately these gems are few and far apart.
Sadly, until Hollywood execs stop being a bunch of followers,i dont think we will ever see a show quite like Kung fu again.I would love to see a film adaptation of the series.Although knowing Hollywood it would be nowhere near as good as the show was.

Just came across your post & I completely agree with it. Apparently there's some talk about a feature film being made today. As you wrote in 2010, Hollywood could only ruin it, removing the philosophy & adding much more "action" as a substitute.

I've since layed to rest the drloomis666 username but my opinion remains the same as it did in 2010.Except for a few gems here and there Hollywood is more interested in the latest trends and what looks cool and less interested in originality and quality.

Your right. If a Kung fu movie were made today they would take everything that made it such an excellent series and replace it with cool looking big budget action sequences. They would miss the whole point of the series which despite it's title had more to do with morality and philosophy than it did fighting.

I'm really impressed by it. I was expecting something corny and dated not this minimal, philosophical thing with occasional fisticuffs. I thought the ancient spiritual wisdom would be limited to a few fortune cookie crumbs thrown to the audience between brawls, not this ongoing primer you get each episode. I thought at least the fight scenes would be typical Hollywood exaggeration but so far they are restrained and grounded. No impossible feats of athletic prowess only existing on screens. I really wish there was more uplifting material like this around, its a shame our culture is so hollowed out at this point.

Do not despair, Grasshopper, can you not hear the sound of rebirth around you?

Excellent show, I agree. They would alter the pace if they were to try something like this today. The show's deliberate, Valium-like pacing is part of its charm. Today's younger viewers, raised on video games, wouldn't have the patience for such a show.
