Pat Grant but not Pat Reid?and how did he get away?

Anyone know(especially since Reid was the technical advisor on the series and it's based on his book)why Edward Hardwicke's Pat Grant was not called Pat Reid?.It's the same with the other characters it's odd I think that as it's a true story the names have been changed.

Also I just watched the episode where Carrington comes back to Colditz but nobody asks if Pat got away with him.How did he make it back to the UK(or indeed did he or not until after the war?)

My dad has Reid's book I have read it but it's been a while, I can't remember if his escape is mentioned or if it's just about the time at Colditz Castle.

It's because it's based on factual situations but is dramatised ie fictionalised to a large degree. It's really a fictional drama loosely based on real events so I suppose the name changes was to reflect this.
If you read the books you'll see the differences immediately.

Says this on Wiki:

Reid remained in Switzerland until after the end of the war, serving as an Assistant Military Attaché in Berne from 9 March 1943 until early 1946, and receiving promotion to Temporary Major on 1 November 1945.[2] He was unusually discreet about his duties there, but was in fact working for the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) gathering intelligence from arriving escapees.[8]
