Im assuming bob was a successful phyciatrist and they live in a very nice apt building so I find it a bit odd he has a small tv(13or 15 inch) you would think he would have like most people a large console tv.he doesnt even have a separate tv for the bedroom.

shareWe were a very middle class family, we had a large 2 bedroom house in the burbs. Electronics were very expensive back then. We had one tv in the family room...a 1970 19" Zenith color tv. In the mid 70's we bought a 13" portable black and white tv for the kitchen. This way mom could catch the news while cooking dinner. VCR's were so expensive, we didn't get one until the 80's. Not one of my friends or neighbors had 2 color tv's. Back then, people very much lived within their means.

On The Dick van Dyke Show, Rob WORKED in television and the Petries only had one set. It wasn't even one of those bigger floor consoles. It was a small one that they sometimes wheeled into the bedroom to watch at night.
My parents got a portable TV for their bedroom when I was about ten. My dad always called it his "nightlight". My parents would put it on and both of them would fall asleep!
Not everyone has a TV in the bedroom though. As much as he liked watching TV, my ex-husband would NEVER permit a television in the bedroom. There's no way I could have stayed up watching TV while he was trying to sleep. He was a very fussy, light sleeper. I actually preferred to read in bed, but I had to do that in the living room! Some people can't fall asleep with any lights or sound in the background.
Some folks don't watch much TV and see no need to spend a lot of money on one. As many have said, back then TVs were relatively expensive. Even today there are people who watch very little TV so why have more than one?
