Monday, 3/31/2014: #1.3 'No Sign of the Cross'

10/11/1972, Crime, Drama

Despite being handcuffed to the arm of a priest, a valuable religious artifact is switched for a worthless fake while being transported to Los Angeles, and Banacek must figure out how the switch was made in order to track down the stolen item.

I know this isn't everyone's favorite episode, but it's certainly better than last night — "The Greatest Collection of them All" — which I believe was the root for "If Max Is So Smart..." because they ran out of ideas[1]. I'd have kept Max and tossed the Collection.

[1] Seriously. I've got "Kold", which involves a snowman acquiring a rather large family. ;)

I love the line, Bananachek. I guess, if you're dating Thomas, your a Banachick. My biggest problem with this episode is no Felix. I think the banter between the 2 are excellent. It's my least favorite from the 1st season. But if this is the worst that they can do is still very good.

It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury signifying nothing.

I just finished it now (first viewing). I thought that it was poor compared to the other two which I have seen (the one about the train and the one about the disappearing football player).

Is this one usually considered to be a poor episode?

I've probably posted most of the dates of the episodes as they aired on Cozi - but I'll guess from memory - I think this one was the first one to air...trying to stimulate some brain cells)

I don't think it was quite as good because it just didn't feel right. (I was ten when this first aired and I remember having the same mindset) I'm not sure why, other than after what the first three (I'm counting the pilot as #1) did, it was a a sag. I've never thought about going back and figuring out how to "fix" them. If I did it, this one would be on the list.

I think one of the things which hurts it is the remainder of the 1972 episodes are pretty solid.

By now I've seen four of them - two excellent ones and two which seemed to be copycats of the first two. I hope that there are plenty of good ones coming up!

So I take it you used to like it when Ellery would break the 4th wall before going into the final commercial?

I loved that episode. A real mix of characters and probably the most characters (not to mention the oddest personalities) kept in the game for the entire episode.

...and the ending of the one with the coins also reminds me of the ending of one Ellery Queen story (which unfortunately was never filmed).

This: http://www.google.com/cse?cx=011625061877579591195%3Agihjchjd274&i e=UTF-8&q=%22Ellery+Queen%22&sa=Search&siteurl=www.google. com%2Fcse%2Fhome%3Fcx%3D011625061877579591195%3Agihjchjd274&ref=&a mp;ss=7724j6635420j33#gsc.tab=0&gsc.q=%22Ellery%20Queen%22%20TV%20 Script

might seem like drinking from a firehose, but it searches for a Google engine with the search terms, ["Ellery Queen" tv script] as it's a CSE (Custom Search Engine) which you can build by creating such a beast, then add links you'd like to be searched through. You may also tell it to search the rest of the world as well, but also that your results come first.

I created this one so I could hunt for scripts of TV shows I want to write a script, or something similar and make a use of the elements.

This particular one (I've got several of them) searches sites which it believes to have TV scripts. What it also does, via parameters I've designed, is search web pages which point to it or it points to, as well as add successful links to the database. It's an older version of Google's system, so it might have some rather behaviors.

There are some scripts listed there and you can feel free to play with it https://www.google.com/cse/home?cx=011625061877579591195:gihjchjd274 specifying parameters the same way you do with regular Google.

I haven't touched it in almost 5 years, but I seem to recall it's got 600+ web sites in its inventory and should continue to build on its own as it's used.

I hadn't used it until I saw someone in the TV Writer community was hand-crafting a list of shows and where their scripts are. I wish them well, as it's been rather interesting to watch it be built, but I'd rather run it through a search engine and to be able to get updates dynamically on the offchance someone didn't know about it.
