I'm sorry, I don't know 7-9. Who are they? I haven't seen the tv Sherlock Holmes, I guess I'm missing out. I've read my lions share of Holmes novels and like Banacek I never figure them out. My favorite Sherlock Holmes was Christopher Plummer in MURDER BY DECREE?

reply

Bunk Moreland and Lester Freamon are from The Wire, man--the greatest cop show of all time. Dale Cooper, of course, is from Twin Peaks. The weirdest cop show of all time.

Jeremy Brett's Holmes is the definitive version. The early ones are the best, since Brett's health began to decline in the later seasons, and they were getting to the later Holmes stories, which are of a lesser caliber.

reply

I never watched Twin Peaks and I didn't have HBO which is where THE WIRE was on.

reply

Arguably the two best American TV series of all time. Netflix.

reply

All I can say is WHOOPS!

reply

I think there would be a LOT of argument with that. LOL

Your favorites, certainly. That's not a universal truth.

reply

FYI, Cind5. The name is Spenser with an S like the poet :-)

reply

You're right. I'm idiot. I read all the novels as well and yes I'm ashamed of myself. BTW emp, why don't you tell us your top ten, please.

reply

I gotta think about that one, since I am mostly a Spenser nut (I don't consider Banacek a detective, although I like the show). And the name is Eric to my friends :-)

reply

My name is Eric as well. And spelled correctly just like yours. And I'm guessing I'm 2 years older than you.

reply

I just got done watching "Stone Cold" and I saw the rest of them movies w/ Tom Selleck, so I'll give a honorable mention to JESSE STONE. He's not in the top 10, but some really fine movies and a very interesting character.

reply

It's probably been at least a year since Twin Peaks was said to be making a comeback.

The question begging to be answered is: Year 3 or reboot?

You beat me to it Darlin'.

Think I'll toss in Joe Mannix and those guys from "Life" and "The Glades".

So it goes.

reply

Thomas Sullivan Magnum III is the greatest TV show detective of all time. Nobody else even comes close.

reply

I agree with the other post. Thomas Magnum is number 1! That show was so well done. I still watch it every night on Encore Classics.

1. Magnum
2. Columbo
3. Joe Friday
4. Banacek
5. Simon & Simon
6. Ellery Queeen
7. Lance White(for those who watched the Rockford Files)

reply

Lance White is living proof that it's better to be lucky than good. BTW, I know if I had a bottom ten Vern ST. Cloud would be on it. If not number 1.

Spenser with an "S", like the poet.

reply

Any list that doesn't even mention Joe Mannix has to be from someone who's wet behind the ears. LOL

reply

Also of note is Paul Drake. Drake's work on Perry Mason is the type of thing REAL private detectives do, not the fantasy cases written for these other characters. Drake is also the longest running detective on one series, at eleven seasons ... and the early seasons have almost as many episodes as two modern seasons.
