Not made for TV

Contrary to some of the comments, this was not a made for TV movie. It was a theatrical production and release, though certainly has that TVM vibe to it.

You are right. Even the generally favorable review in the NY Times mentions the television feel of the movie. It opened in New York October of 1972.

I also remember seeing it in the theater when it was released, after having read the book. The ending was very much changed.

Not only the ending, although I really don't remember how the book ended. I do remember that it was summer in the book.

The ending of the film is extremely surreal and creepy. I love it. It is classic trippy '70s horror.
