What if all five ticket winners were adults?

Willy Wonka says the reason he sent out the tickets was because he needed a child to run the factory. However, there were many adults trying to find a ticket. All five ticket winners could've easily been adults. So his plan could've very likely failed, and he could've easily been forced to give the factory to an adult, even though he said he wouldn't trust one.

There was no legal document that said Wonka would give anything to any ticket holder except a lifetime supply of chocolate and a tour of the factory, which he fulfilled. He never mentioned giving the factory away until he decided that Charlie would be deserving of it.

I just assumed any adult finding a ticket would give it to his child, his niece or nephew, his grandchild, neighbor's child, friend's child, etc. or sell the thing to the highest bidder.

Personally, I think the contest was rigged from the start. These kids were, more or less, hand selected. Especially Charlie.

An illusion, a trick, to keep everyone from realizing that everything has been pre-determined and from taking too much advantage of the situation more so than they already had.

That peculiar man Charlie met on the street corner is telling since it is such a mysterious encounter. If the goal was to put Charlie in a state of fear to keep him from becoming a brat, it mostly worked.

Hand picked?

Where are you being that from? And why?

reply

There's the computer that can predict where the bars are, so theoretically there's some math involved here. If it can predict where the bars are, Wonka could have known where they'd be going and who'd be buying.

reply

That computer was not proven to work and it makes no sense that such a thing could even be predicted.

It also does not make sense that Wonka would hand pick those other four children.

However, at the end of the day, very little of the movie makes sense and is one big plot hole from beginning to end.

reply

Purely a guess but "Slugworth" appears to each of the winners in short order. I'm thinking that Wonka planted the tickets and had the Slugworth decoy in place to complete the story to try to lure them in with their own greed. It doesn't make sense otherwise.

reply

Well, yeah...

I always wondered how Slugworth was always at the right place at the right time. I mean, the tickets were sent all around the world..

reply

"It doesn't make sense otherwise"

Yeah, that's a good point.

Pretty bad when a kids movie baffles the adults LOL

It leads me to believe that there were scenes omitted that would explain things. Otherwise, whomever adapted the novel into the screenplay had their head right up their ass. Granted, I hadn't read the novel however, I'm sure it made more sense than the movie.

reply

Maybe, but it says you can bring one member of your immediate family. That's almost guaranteed to be a child they'll bring along.

There's also a little magic to Wonka, I think. He's maybe more able to plant those tickets places than might otherwise be thought possible...

All but two of them were American, too - and the ultimate winner lived in the same town where the factory was located. What a sham.

Thanks for totally, thoroughly, and most of all - convincingly destroying a beloved childhood memory... bastard.

reply

I really hope I haven’t spoiled your memories - as a middle aged adult I watched the film last Christmas, for the first time in years, and it’s lost none of its magic and charm.

LOL,no. I was commenting on your brilliant observation. Unfortunately, some emotions don't transcend the posted message.. Keep up that snark!!

WHEW! My sarcasm has backfired at times, very happy this isn't the case here! :)
