Grandpa's smoking habit

How come Mrs. Bucket was trying to keep Grandpa Joe smoking his pipe when he stated he was giving it up? Why would she want him to smoke, especially if a good portion of her income was spent on the pipe tobacco? I never understood that, as if him smoking was more important than the family having a decent meal every once in awhile.

Maybe because tobacco was dirt cheap in those days so giving it up wouldn't have made any substantial difference to their lifestyle. Mrs Bucket says 'it's only one pipe a day' so she probably realised better than Joe that they would have gone on eating cabbage water whether he gave it up or not. Just my take on it.

It's because he's an even moodier bastard when he goes too long without his baccy fix.

Fair enough! Can we get an opinion from someone who's not a retard?

It's probably one of the few pleasures Grandpa can enjoy. The mom didn't want to deprive him of that.
