I felt really sorry for Shelly Winters Character

All the people around her seemed to be ripping her off and i think the fake seances helped drive her over the edge, and then the the two children resorted to stealing some of her jewllery I wasnt happy with the ending either and thought that Christopher was really the evil one the way he smiles after his set light to the pantry

I agree 100%. She was just a nice person who loved children but had mental problems brought on by a sad life. It's true she does, in a way, become abusive to the two kids at the end as she attempts to keep them with her, but she doesn't deserve the end she gets.

I suppose this might be what is called a "black comedy." The ending is meant to be funny in a twisted way. Perhaps the fairy tale Hansel and Gretel actually ends that way. Reading the fairy tale, we might assume the witch deserves what she gets, but this story helps to humanize the character, kind of like Gregory Maguire's Wicked.
