Is this ever on british TV?

I'd love to see it. The front cover of the paper back I have has Antony Hopkins crouching in an action pose under an old fashioned helicopter. It looks great.

It was on TV (Film 4) a few nights back and looked VERY dated to be truthful.
The music accompanying the cemetery fistcuffs scene is incredibly redolent of Batman and Robin and I can readily see why Sean Connery and Co were never threatened. Having said that, the Air Sea Rescue exploration sequence features some of the most stunning aerial photography I have ever seen cinematically captured and the film is worth watching for this alone

Its one of the better film adaptations of Alistair Macleans' work.... in my opinion the best is The Guns Of Navarone.

I am the Primeminister of Canada.. guy.

Yes, just watching it now. The fightscene was dire! Very enjoyable though. All star cast too, eh?

reply

Kejaba - I'm watching it on Film 4 + 1 !

Me too! (you're probably the same as me - laptop to hand with IMDB open while you're watching any classic film)

It's on Film4 in the UK; showing a couple of times a week at the moment. Great quality print; seems to be in 15:9(!) with tiny black bars up the sides.

Not a great film, but a really interesting period piece - and Hopkins is great in it, and wholly convincing as a bit of a fighter. His accent varies a bit between dead posh and Cardiff, but you can forgive him because his non-verbal acting in this is spot on.

Don't forget "Where Eagles Dare" that was great too.

reply

So weird you mentioning Where Eagles Dare !
I come form Tobermory on Mull, as a child I remember them filming "When Eight Bell Toll" and seeing all the cast a crew and getting there autograph's,which I still have, but as a treat for the Island the film company put on the film free of charge "Where Eagles Dare" for a week that we could go and see My brother and I went every night to see it we enjoyed it that much I don't even know if it had been released at the pictures then! but the excitement of having the film crew there and all the stuff they were doing was great.

Cool I love when Eight Bells Toll, You can almost smell the sea air.

Just caught this on Film4 & enjoyed it - a pretty solid thriller with a high body count, admittedly a bit lacking in humour, but quite tough in that early 70's style, what with Hopkins running over the bad guys boat at one point & then gunning them down in the water. One thing I really love about WEBT is the photography & the general atmosphere of the film - everything looks bleak, harsh & cold, cold, cold - there's a rough hewn 'Boy's Own' quality about WEBT I like a lot. Shame they don't make action movies in the same style today. Incidentally, the version I saw seemed to have a few rather obvious edits (not least the crossbow scene!) I think I'll have to pick up the DVD.

I would agree with the points posted above. Not the greatest of films but a wonderful 'feel' to it; very much of its time and an interesting social document of early 70s Britain. Hopkins very much in his 'shouty' period - but surprisingly convincing as a tough guy. My fave Hopkins performance from this period though is as the 'compassionate policeman' in "Juggernaut".

It is on FilmFour now 30/07/2008 and I'm sure will be on again.

AH looks incredibly young.

Couldn't agree more, loved the atmosphere of this film, a bit of rain and bleakness wouldn't have gone a miss in the Bond franchise actually. Also, it's very, very seventies; like a 90 minute Black Magic chocolates commercial.

And in English, hemmingssm?

Must be a progressive prison in which you're resident, for them to let you use a PC.

Good for them, but watch yourself in the shower if you drop the soap.

The Channel 4 screening was heavily censored. Cuts included squib shots on the bad guys in the final gun battle, the harpoon hitting Lord Chamley, the crossbow killing etc.
Total - 1 minute missing.

Yes I noticed that, but it's par for the course on British TV today

It's actually being screened on Film4 +1 at present
