Who are you looking at?

The last line in the film. This gives Richard Burton's middle class roots away, and with other factors illustrates the woefull miscasting of him in this role. Vic Dakin would never have pronounced his 'H's' or 'G's' or the present indicative plural 'are'. It sounds much more 'East End' with those left out. Try it!

"Oo you lookin' at"? is much more 'back street' Stepney, Whitechapel or even Sarf' Londin (South London).

Richard Burton's middle class roots, funny.

in other words, what jnarimbaud is saying, is you are are a complete joker - richard burton is the son of a miner, so not middle-class

I did notice that the Welsh accent came through a few times. Burton's cockney accent did seem a bit fake; though perhaps non-Londoners would not notice.

dead right, just like John Thaw being cast as Regan in the Sweeney; couldn't quite pull the accent off. Non-Londoners wouldn't get it!

reply

The character of Regan was actually supposed to be from Manchester.

Burton was as working class as they come!

12th of 13 kids to a coal - mining dad and a bar - tending mum is certainly evidence of this.🐭

Burton's voice is so distinctive, even idiosyncratic, that it is almost beyond accents. One would need to be really picky to object to his work here.

Rather more disturbing, for me at least, is the jarring juxtaposition of movie royalty with a cast of mostly TV and small budget film actors. It feels as bizarre as if Brad Pitt showed up in an episode of Eastenders.

I note in the trivia section that Burton's brother thought this movie ended Burton's superstar status because it looked like he would take anything. Quite so.

Not a bad film btw, but what an awful soundtrack, and the direction is pedestrian and most of the supporting cast put in 'stock' performances.

Imo only Steve McQueen put in more good performances in undeserving movies than Burton.
