Dora's Mother

After everything the Gypsy woman (aka Anna, Dora's mother) did to seek revenge on the town's people to avenge the death of her lover, the count,
why did she push her own daughter out of the way when Emil tried to kill her, getting herself killed instead?

reply

Well, I guess she finally decided that she couldn't allow it to happen. Fine, to hell with all the other kids, they meant nothing. But her own daughter, that was just too much.

There is an earlier scene in the movie with Emil boasting about how the Gypsy Woman will be present when they corner Dora to tear the crucifix from her neck, thereby allowing him to bite her. But the close-up on the Gypsy's face shows she is seriously considering against doing this.....

It's a pleasure! I hope what I said made some sense anyway, but that's the way it came across to me (the dozen or so times I've seen the movie...LOL). It's one of my absolute faves.
