Hammer Films question

When I was a kid TBS or TNT had various Hammer films running in the afternoons. I found this one, and a few others, but there is one that has been bothering me - I can't figure out the title or if it's even a Hammer film.

The plot is (as I recall) about a guy (in modern time) who falls in love with a girl, who has a sister who got burned at the stake centuries ago during the witch trials, but instead of letting her sister die, the lead girl gives her soul and her faith to the devil to save the sister. The sister was horribly disfigured and looked really old in modern time (and didn't speak much, just looked mysterious and spooky) but the lead female was still youthful and pretty. I guess at the end, the guy had to save the lead female because she was aging quickly, and he ended up giving HIS soul to the devil to have her young again. Does this ring any bells with anyone? It was made in the seventies. I think the lead girl aging quickly had something to do with either the sister dying, or the guy loving her. I remember she didn't want him to make the same decision she had made.

I have no idea what that movie is, but it's definitely not Hammer. There are reference guides to Hammer films and none of them describe a film like that. Does sound fun, though! Was the lead actress Barbara Steele?

reply

Could be...I'll check out her credits and see if any of them ring a bell. Thanks for the lead!

I can't be positive, but there's something about your description that has me wondering if it might not be a Steele movie. But I could be way off. (shrug) But hey, who knows?

Defo sounds to me like the Babs Steele gem BLACK SUNDAY (1961),aka MASK OF SATAN,directed by Italian maestro Mario Bava.

Peter Benassi

Well, I looked at her credits, and though she DOES look very familiar to me, none of the plots to the movies sound exactly right. *sigh*

You seem to have some knowledge of these old films. I wonder if you can help me with this one?......

I am not sure what the plot of the movie is that I am looking for. I saw it on late night tv as a kid back in 1977. But it was in a gothic setting. To me the lead actor looked a lot like Maxwell Caulfield....but according to IMDB his first movie was in 1982. But there was music in the film that by looking on the internet I learned that it is titled The Hearse Song. I cannot remember for sure if the words were sung during the soundtrack but my friend's cousin, who we were watching this movie with, was singing the tune with the words...."The worms crawl in. The worms crawl out. In your stomach and out your mouth." This is a link to the tune:

Does anybody know what film this was or if it was a Hammer film? I have been racking my old brain trying to figure it out and what the plot of the movie was. I can't think of it to save my life.

See if this might be it......The Reincarnation of Isabel.

Or maybe this one......Nightmare Castle.

Actually sounds a little like "Touch of Satan" (which also showed during the final season or two of Mystery Science Theater 3000).
