Why does Robert want to go to California?

Hi there IMDb folks!

What do you think is the reason that Robert pushes on toward California? He whispers it in the girls ears and I'm curious to hear what you think it is that keeps him going?

He probably heard of its topographical beauty and the awesome weather...

He wanted to join the goldrush. Go to CA, dig up some gold and then go back to Sweden as a success and a rich man.
The main reason Robert wanted to move to America in the first place was because of the gold.

It was all because of the book he was reading. He seemed a little brainwashed by it, though.
