I remember watching this movie when it first came out in the early '70's and recently purchased the sequel "The New Land" which was excellent. I am trying to find a copy of "The Emigrants" but it is no longer available. Anybody out there know where to locate either a DVD, VHS or Laser Disk?
There is a DVD-R copy available on superhappyfun.com. I just got a copy of it in the mail but I haven't checked out the picture quality yet. It has English subtitles.
I just watched the dubbed version and it's TERRIBLE. Among other things, they chose to have the actors dub the English with bad Swedish accents. It's like watching the Muppets do Bergman.
There is a great DVD box released in Sweden. No english subtitles though. Region 1 audiences are still waiting to see the 3-hour cuts of both films with subtitles. Let's hope Warner decides to dig the films out of the vaults (they own the rights for US distribution).
There are a couple of versions out there that can be downloaded but they all have problems - poor quality and failure of sound, picture and subtitles to synch properly. If Warner still controls the US rights, it's possible they might put these out in their Warner Archive series at some point. But they'd likely be the severely trimmed US versions - and probably dubbed. At the moment, I can't remember if WB made both subtitled and dubbed prints of these pictures back in the early 70s. Possibly the uncut versions will be available in England at some point. Too bad the new Swedish box set lacks English titles.
