Disappointing

I just saw it, and it does NOT compare to the brilliant works of Melville (Le Samourai, Le Cercle Rouge, Bob le Flambeur). There are some great scences (robbery, conclusion) but it leaves you with something to be desired. No wonder Melville was disappointed with his last venture. In any case, for any fan of Alain Delon-Melville, it's a good starting point.

Yes, it doesn't quite match up to the likes of Bob le Flambeur and Le Doulos, but nevertheless it's still a pretty enjoyable film. I love the opening sequence by the sea in the rain. The one major factor that let it down for me were the special effects during the train/helicopter sequence.

Still I give it 8/10.

Love the first 10 mins. What a perfect bank to rob. And it was like Melville organised the weather for the scene.

His name's Lebowski ?! That's YOUR name Dude!

It was good in parts, but it didn't seem to 'flow', Delon didn't look too interested in the role either. Did him and Melville have a fight or something? I read that Melville fought/was disliked by quite a few of the actors who starred in his films, any truth to that?

From what I've read of Melville, he was extremely demanding... to the point where actors would become frustrated. That said, apparently his working relationship with Delon was different. Melville liked him because Delon understood the roles and could hit the high notes Melville demanded.

I'm pretty sure they didn't have a falling out.

Additionally, I'm pretty sure Melville transitioned from Belmundo to Delon specifically for Delon's ability to play it "disinterested" and detached. I personally can't imagine Ventura or Belmundo in Le Samourai or Un Flic.

But... since I've only ever heard second hand information, I'm really just trying to connect some dots. Sorry if this doesn't help.

I can only agree with this. When some other posters state that Delon didn't look too interested with his part, I think it is the part exactly! It's almost "wooden acting", if you think of it, but Melville needed this cold and detached approach to the characters.

In a nutshell, Lots of style, short on substance.

not to be a dick but yeah, HE DID. It's called film making.

Okay, I did come off like a dick but seriously, do you think filmmakers cannot create rain in a scene if they want too? It's like almost saying 'Gee, he was really lucky the actor wore that cop uniform in that scene. It really made him look cop like.'

Again, i apologize if i'm unfairly ripping your statement apart but its a very naive comment.

Delon didn't look too interested in the role either.

For you, I totally see what you're saying, however I didn't think Delon was FORCED to do this film against his wishes(as your not interested statement implies), I thought that was integral to his Character. i saw That Quality as part of the cop he was playing, a man who wasn't superficially hunting down the bad guys but a cop who had his duty- where as the non-cop part of his personality would of looked the other way. Its sort of the angels sitting on his shoulder syndrome and he goes with the angel not because He wants to, but because its his job/his role in society.

To me it actually makes his cop portrait more poetic, because the difference between a cop and criminal is a badge. The reason a cop is good at his job is that he wants to be criminal and is as good as the best criminal(because he's as much in love with crime as the crooks) but its his nature to do good that stops him and makes him work for the other team.

Melville must have had quite a collection of fog machines. And the ocean storm machine was fantastic. Where can I get one of those?
