I've only just watched this film for the first time, having seen a short clip from it in one of Johnathon Meades' programmes on France (BBC Four, UK television 2012)
On the train, when Simon takes out that big magnet, it made me think of cartoons like Tom & Jerry or Roadrunner!
Yes, the big horseshoe magnet with the characteristic red paint was hilarious!
This movie sure has some 'camp' value.

But the magnet would have to be big to get the latch to move the way it did, not just right to left but up and over. A small magnet wouldn't have worked.
