I was saddled with this same problem a couple of years ago. Then, miraculously, the DVD finally became available on Netflix. It was listed in their catalog of available rentals for a long while, but was always temporarily unavailable, just like now (the Netflix site currently says that the "availability date is unknown." My bet is that somebody just decided to keep it, given the ridiculous black market for this film. No, it wasn't me. I swear I returned it!

If you're really desperate, there are unwise and daring souls that sell bootlegs on Ebay. You can also easily find an AVI of the movie on the bittorrent networks (like isohunt).

This was legitimatley released on VHS at one time, although copies are now expensive, it's never been officially release on DVD as far as I know.

Another place to buy a pirated copy is at some of the larger car shows and swap meets around the country. Usually about $20, no shippping or tax to pay, of course.

It was officially released on DVD in 1999 by Anchor Bay, and again in 2000 as a special "tin set" that had a few extra bells and whistles, such as a collector's booklet and a keychain. This latter version is the expensive one you'll often see on Ebay. I believe it was a limited pressing of just 15,000 copies, and in fact it was released on today's date, October 24. I'm not sure why you can never find copies of the original 1999 release, either at Netflix or DVD rental stores. It must've also been a limited run. Probably part of the problem is Universal Studios. They're notorious for being very lax in releasing on DVD the classics in their catalog. I'm still waiting for Season 3 of The Rockford Files.

Yep...my cool sister-in-law picked me up the Anchor Bay DVD at Suncoast in 1999...she wouldn't spring the extra bucks for the "tin set" though. It's a great DVD with a director's commentary. They didn't last long...I was lucky. What a gal!

"How fast is that thing?"
"Depends on who's around."

As I said I was not aware of the genuine DVD release of TLBT. I've never seen one. I have tried to locate this on DVD but I've only found the pirate copies. Is this still available? (the real deal, of course) If so could you tell us where?

I've only seen copies available on auction sites like Ebay. My bet is that any place claiming to sell the TLB DVD would be selling a pirated copy. Until they get off their a$$ and do a re-release for us poor saps, I'd advise you to check Netflix periodically and see if it returns to their available stock. Join up if it does, if you're not already a member. Also check the bittorrent networks. If you're really desperate, you can download a 700MB .avi file of it right this very moment.

Thanks for the info about the DVD. I'm a poor sap too. I'm not a member of Netflix, I just don't rent enough movies to get my money's worth. I do own a geniune VHS of TLBT that I bought from Blockbuster several years ago, but I'd like to replace it with a genuine DVD.

If you'll permit me to suggest something illicit...

(1) Join Netflix (after TLB re-emerges)
(2) Get yourself a DVD-RW drive and some TY DVD+R blanks
(3) Install DVDdecrypter and/or DVDshrink
(4) Rip and Burn your favorite 12 movies
(5) Quit Netflix (you pay per month, and so far as I know there is no minimum membership time)

Thank you all for the advice. My sister put it on her netflicks list and it said that the date was unknown.
