Me and Bobby McGee

Who sings the song cover playing at the gas station stop on the GTO radio?

I checked and there are countless artists that have covered this song.

Don't know. But as you probably know, Janis
Joplin sang that song.

It's not a cover, it's Kris Kristofferson's original recording. They wanted to use Janis Joplin's version, but it was too expensive to buy the rights.

Bobby Bare eventually covered that song as well. It's a good rendition. He and Kristofferson were good friends.

Bobby Bare is one of those guys who's never gotten enough credit, IMHO. He's usually known for his novelty songs, but he did a lot of good records.

Yes, it's Kris' version from his 1970 debut album, but the "original" recording was done by Roger Miller in 1969. It made it to no. 13 on the Country Top 40 charts that summer. Janis' cover was her only no. 1, and that was posthumous.

I stand corrected, at least chronologically - although there are apparently some who credit Gordon Lightfoot with the first recording.

Technically, however, since Kris wrote the song (with Fred Foster), can any version by him really be called a cover?
