Other Road movie recommendations...

I think it's a truly terrific format, films like this one have and naturally lends it self towards the progression of characters. I've tried to dig-up as many as possible (Fandango, My Own Private Idaho, etc)

but was looking to see if any of you film afecianado's can think of any other films in this vein?

you know, even just general story on-the-go films will be of worth to me, too like Apocalypse Now.

It's "Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry" and was produced by Norman T. Herman.

Since you did your disertation on old car movies:

I have been looking for two old car movies. 1 has a one of a kind plot. I can tell you that it was out on VHS. I saw it in the mid 80’s and I would say that it was a “B” movie but a GREAT car movie nonetheless. The plot was a disgraced street racer from LA. The two cars were a black 55 Chevy and a 1968 Barracuda (with the long fastback back window) and the guy driving the 55 was BLIND. He drove in the desert at night and stood on the gas and counted - so he would know how far he had been and then he would turn around and start counting again to get back to his starting point. The final scene has the Barracuda beat a car in a street race, and his opponent can’t handle the defeat so he drives off an incomplete interstate overpass in the final seconds of the movie. With that kind of plot you’d think it would be easy to find. But I have been looking for years with no luck.

The second is about street racers in the Hollywood hills. I can't really tell you any of the cars, I think there was a Porshe but not sure, but I can tell you the last scene has two racers coming down the hills racing and one racer always had a stop watch taped to his rearview mirror. Well in the final scene he loses control and goes off the side of the mountain to his untimely death, but when he does the stop watch is the only thing left on the side of the road. His opponent stops his car, looks over the side of the mountain and clicks the stop watch to make it stop. Again, you'd think it was easy to find, but NO!

CAN ANYONE HELP ME?

Hi Mixon72, the first film you're after is called "Runnung on Empty" can't help with the second....

HI Mixon, The second film about the street racers in the Hollywood Hills is called "King of the Mountain" with Dennis Hopper and Harry Hamlin. Released about 1981. I saw this when it came out and would love to see it again. I don't know of any DVD release. I remember the racing scenes were very good and the cars great I remember the Porsche speedster all tricked out and Hopper driving a rough looking 60's era Corvette Stingray.

My favourite road movie is a German movie from 1976 called "Kings of the Road" or "Im Lauf der Zeit". It's very similar is pacing to Two-Lane Blacktop, but more effective, in my opinion.

Here's its IMDB page: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073152/

What about Kalifornia?

Check out a movie called "Le Mans". It's also a 1971 Zenish Car Movie in very much the same style.

Gumball 3000 videos. Not movies but footage of the rallies. They're pretty cool.

The Brown Bunny - I think Two-Lane Blacktop was a key influence. It's a polarizing movie, however, people either love it or hate it.

Blacktop Afternoon - A short film, but good nonetheless

Drive Baby Drive - Starring on of the Arquettes in another very short film.

Mad Max - Very overshadowed by the the sequels but the original features a lot of 'muscle' cars and lots of white line fever.

C'est Un Rendezvous - Almost mythical lost film finally released on DVD. A French film director had a spare reel of film after shooting his movie so filmed a drive across Paris in the early hours of the morning in real-time swerving to avoid, real traffic etc. It's either very dull or eerily hypnotic depending on your taste.
