Warren what happened?

You deserved the supporting oscar for this and just about every movie you've done. But this one particularly. And now you're dead.

Yeah!
Leonard Maltin's book says "Oates' performance is about as good as you'll ever see and should have had the Oscar".

I believe the Warren Oates deserved an supporting actor Oscar for this, or at least a nomination. My belief on why he didn't is because the studio was not behind the film. Especially now, but even back then, a studio had to really sell a film in order to get an Oscar nomination. It evidently premiered on July 4, 1971, with no advertising or promotion support, because Lew Wasserman didn't like the movie. If it had support, Oates could have been nominated for a best supporting actor for the 1972 Oscars. Godfather dominated that year, with 3 of 5 supporting actor nominations coming from that film. But Oates could have been nominated for this role if the film was actually released on time and promoted.

Agreed . . .
One has to hit middle age to truly appreciate the unique presence that was the underutilized or underrated genius of Warren Oates.

He was/is one of the "unreplaceables".

His performance in TWO LANE is nothing short of understated tragic brilliance WITHOUT any scenery chewing.
