A QUESTION, PLEASE EXPLAIN

I loved this film but there's one scene I just do not get. Why is the G.T.O suddenly unconscious when he tries to steal the plates from the other car? Did they put something in his drink, hit him in the head, or was there something completely different. It just seemed really out of place, and the fact that it's never brought up again seemed odd too.

Somebody here has been drinking and I'm sad to say it ain't me - Allan Francis Doyle

My guess was that he had been up for a long time and then just before he goes to have a drink out of his flask...and the booze and him being tired just added up

reply

Seemed obvious to me he was wasted on booze.

reply

He's chugging out of the flask and refilling it from a bottle while they're waiting at the gas station.

The more interesting question is why did he suddenly start drinking so heavily when they got to the gas station... he had been drinking in earlier scenes, but no where near as heavily.

reply

I thinking he was crashing off the speed he was taking. When he opened his trunk he said he had other "products to go up, down, or sideways".

I'm so glad someone else asked this question, I was thinking the same thing. The other thing about that scene which had no resolution was that, that guy showed up and called the cops and they show the two cars split up while the cops were following the Chevy but then nothing came of it. In the next scene they're together again and no Cops, no chase scene or escape, nothing. I guess they just got away. Kinda of a weird scene...

I think you're missing something, the scene where the Driver tells the cops that GTO is driving recklessly is actually the Driver trying to help GTO, by peeling out to get the cops to forget GTO and chase them.

If you go back and look Taylor says when they are on the side of the road show off each others cars in kind of a show and tell deal before they get in the the small town in the rain two of the questions are answered. 1 Dennis Wilson tells him his carb is leaking real bad and GTO says he can't be broke down so Wilson tells him he'll fix it at the next town as Taylor says they won't leave him broken down cause it won't be a race if the Chevy is 500 miles ahead. Kind of a boasting statement as we will fix your car and still beat you anyway. 2 they trade cars for the drive in to town to show GTO how fast the Chevy really is. Wilson said he would drive the car to town to keep it running with the carb problem. As far as the cops go, in the special disc two disk where monte is talking he said they had a line where one of the cops say "I think we pulled the wrong car over" kind of statement but it got cut. They probbably should have left it in. They were also in Texas at the state line to OK and i'm sure in those days cops would not cross state lines for a traffic deal so the Chevy blasts off and they let GTO go because of it.

It was real early in the morning after being up for along time. You also see that Dennis Wilson had sort of worn down almost as bad so with GTO drinking like he did him kind of drifting off/passing out almost was no suprize to me. Early in the race part of the film Mechanic even says that if you don't watch what eat and drink you will get in trouble real quick plus being by himself driving also is going to be a problem after driving so far with out resting.

I was just going to post about this very scene. I seem to remember his showing off his stash of pep in the trunk and probably took something to nod off and get rest.
