Location question

Towards the end of the film, George C. Scott and Joanne Woodward await Moriarty's arrival at the entrance to a tunnel in Central Park.

Does that tunnel actually exist, and if so, where in the park is it?
Many thanks

I just watched it again and it kind of sort of looked like the tunnel was "painted in" - the black just looked too consistent.

So I don;t know, but I don;t think the tunnel is a real place.

The tunnel is real. I have seen in it many movies that were made in NYC. I am not positive, but for some reason I think I saw it in Death Wish. I also think it was portrayed in Wolf. It was in a bunch of other movies too.

Look for it in Hair, the musical film version by Milos Forman. Used to great effect in the first half of the movie.

reply

It's not a tunnel, really, but the base of a bridge with a path running through.

It's almost impossible to tell where that tunnel is in the park -- there are many of them just like that throughout Central Park (and Central Park is really quite huge!).

I have seen in several (mostly older) movies where they appear to use real Park locations, but do in fact have a scrim on the back side. I assume so they can keep a smaller (cheaper) area under control of lighting and action.

Sometimes the effect is minor continuity errors when the "tunnel" is treated as a simple underpass and the action moves through it. Black doom for a bit, then clearly visible on the other side despite night time once they go through.

I recall thinking this was the same thing at the time. Apparently real, but far too dark so apparently blocked off or something.

Agree also with others above: Many, many of these, all built to the same plan so with the passage of time (changes in foliage) no way to tell which one it might have been now.

It's surprising that Trish, who nicely signed off from Dublin, Ireland went with the user name of "your mofo".
