This movie is actually from a novel...

The novel; Runway Zero-Eight is actually pretty good, it was and early work of Arthur Hailey who went on to write some blockbuster best sellers like Hotel and Airport later in his career.

I haven't seen this movie in years but I seem to recall that it sticks pretty close to the novel. And of course this, and Airport provided the bulk of the jokes for "Airplane".

It's a bit more complicated than that. Airplane! is based on Zero Hour, which was written by Arthur Hailey. He used the same plot with different characters in his book Runway Zero-Eight, which was then turned into this movie.

The correct interpretation is that Airplane! and Terror in the Sky are both remakes of Zero Hour, but Airplane! is the more faithful of the two.

Even more complicated is the fact that Zero Hour was a re-make of Flight Into Danger.
