Go to www.revengeismydestiny.com, click on "Genres" and then "Teen Spirit." I'm gonna get it soon too.

Did you get your copy from this source? If so, how is the quality?

Sundance has suddenly placed this film on their "heavy rotation" broadcast schedule. A DVD will definitely be forthcoming.
Sundance doesn't just pluck films out of the vault without a little teensy backstory going on!
Come on people this is 2006!!!!!!

i don't get sundance in europe - is it possible for TCM to get interested in it , too? if i knew a way to pimp for a dvd release , i would: only "One Flew over The Cuccoo'k Nest" i consider better than this gem.
shareWhenever an old (and GREAT) movie starts to get regularly broadcast on TV or cable --seemingly for no reason at all -- realize that a DVD release is in the works and they're trying to get the public psyched up to buy it. In the case of "Taking Off" the movie lives up to the hype.
Even if you don't get Sundance, one of your "artsy" channels should be broadcasting this movie shortly. Keep doing google searches and checking your TV listings. It'll be appearing.
I never even HEARD of this movie until I accidentally caught it on TV.
I'm sure you'll be seeing it in a matter of weeks.
Have a good thanksgiving and Christmas.

Well, I believe that since this little gem contains so MANY songs and original songwriters and so forth, that it is a question of royalties and Universal contracts that were never signed by some of the performers. I do know that the one lady in the auditions who sings the part in "Sentimental"--"Let's start holding.."(the blonde in pigtails, snapping her fingers a bit), had asked the producers of the film to take her out of it. However, they could not at the time of release, yet they removed her photo from the paperback novels release. It contains over 120 photos.
Also, keep in mind that Ike Turner wrote "Goodbye, So Long" and it was Tina singing back then. We know that story.
And please don't forget Carly Simon. She was an unknown songwriter then, and she might be another reason for this endless wait for DVD. Not to mention Kathy Bates and her folk-singin' ass. She has a lot of power in Hollywood, you know.
Let's just cross our fingers and hope for a Criterion Collection release.
I seriously doubt Universal on this one.
It won the Palm D'or at Cannes the year it was released for God's sake!
Royalties!
This is ALSO why the brilliant series THE LARRY SANDERS SHOW has not been released on DVD either.
WHATTA AMAZING WELL-CAST, WELL-WRITTEN, WELL-DIRECTED, WELL-PRODUCED series!
If you haven't seen it, you owe it to yourself to at least watch a few episodes.
Pure GENIUS!
I'm now going to cry myself to sleep.
It's 10:30 PM and I'm tired.
Keep the faith. Eventually, we'll get the good stuff on DVD.
Happy Thanksgiving.

It's running this month on the Sundance Channel.
shareI picked up my copy at kultflixxx....fricken wierd movie that took a couple of views to really understand. At first I didn't like it, thinking that since I was born in the 70s that its humor was before my time.
It wasn't until I watched it again much later that I realized how interesting the film is, even as a time piece curiosity. The songs are great too!
There is a site called Pimpadelic Wonderland at http://www.pimpadelicwonderland.com/home.html that deals exclusively with various obscure films from that era. They have a wide selection and they grade the film quality. I first heard of "Taking Off" from this site but saw it last night on the Sundance Channel.
Sincerely,
Darin Robbins
I am really surprised how hard it is in USA or wherever to obtain a copy. I know many people who have one (including me) but I´m afraid it won´t help you much since it´s in Czech. (We have to spoil "our" great director :))
shareI caught it on TV/Video some years ago, and transfered it to DVD (german language!). So I got it, I still hope it will some days appear in an appropriate Edition, for it's an very moving, funny feature!!!
I love it!
8 of 10!
Yes, it was on Hungarian Tv (called tv2) few minutes ago...
I've recorded this GREAT movie (hungarian language dubbed with original songs (subtitled)...
Classification to "18"....

Hello,
Ebay usually has a copy and go on Google they had a few there. I actually saw this when it came out and was a kid. I remembered everything but the name of the movie! Yesterday it aired on IFC. I remember Roger Ebert liked it. I did too! I was such a hippie.

Are you sure it was on IFC???
Taking Off was released on VHS, but has never had an"official" DVD release. BTW, I first saw the film in London -- the f word wasn't bleeped. It was bleeped in the States. I'd expect any DVD to be a dub. This needs a serious release. It is one of the great films about the 1960s. Alice's Restaurant is another.
shareThis is now out on Blu-ray in France and Germany.

I bought the French blu-ray from Carlotta. It is region free so anyone in the States will be able to play this without a problem. It looks amazing! The french subtitles are removable. If you have a Amazon.com account that will work just fine at Amazon.fr
