Black coffee?

Why Hermie insists on black coffee?

I'm not really sure, but I always assumed that Hermie did this because he felt it might make him look a little more "manly" in Dorothy's eyes.

Just the silly kind of thing a young man might do when trying to impress an "older" woman.

Just my guess........

It's not a mystery. Of course he's doing it to make himself look on the same level as the person he adores. You never did the same thing?

he didnt want her to look at him as a kid...he wanted her to see him as being more mature for his age...only adults he believes take their coffee black kids usually put sugar and cream in...he tried to present himself as someone mature for his age...thats why a lot of what he said came out weird because he was trying to hard.

reply

Exactly. If he'd had the chance to smoke a Lucky Strike in front of her, he'd have done that too.

I wonder since its based off a true account ..I wonder if he was really that awkward around her..or was that just how he remembered it being or feeling that way..because he acted like such a little kid around her and for him to be with her right after they got the news of his death it makes you wonder how that happened..What was their age difference again?

reply

About seven years.
