Bit OTT to throw a real tomato at a cat

Anyone else think it was a bit over the top when Dustin Hoffman properly threw that tomato at the cat? It would have been easy to cut it just to make it look like he had. Unnecessary, pointless cruelty to an unsuspecting animal just for the sake of a film. Hoffman and the director should feel ashamed.

"Less reality, more fantasy!"

It was an orange and he threw it off-camera. Then they dubbed in a meow. I can assure you the cat was not harmed. And the hanged cat corpse seen later was probably obtained from a pound or a veterinarian's office.

You're wrong, one of the things he threw was on-camera and showed the cat really getting hit. All of the others were off-camera.

Those were very light throws. A tomato hitting a cat is more surprising than harmful, the cat wouldn’t have been hurt at all. Meows were obviously dubbed in.
